Miracle cures and family tales
This is my all time favorite book. It is historical fiction and it is powerful. Family life on the rancho, travel by foot and by horse back, water shortages and farming struggles, train rides, and other adventures in the times of the Mexican revolution; this is the setting of a beautiful and moving depiction of a curandera of magnificent strength and wisdom. Trapped by her life as a woman of her times and cognizant of her powers she balances life daily and trys to live a good life. She uses her gifts well and lives with the consequences of the powerful men and women around her being threathened by her draw of attention. This story is told with a steady hand by her nephew. He admits that he has had to fill in a few details that are missing from her life story and therefore it must be called fiction. He is loyal to his family history and has written a beautiful honor to his aunt.

Magical realism in Mexico
Luis Urrea's homage to his aunt Theresa, now known as the Saint of Cobora, is a fascinating blend of history and imagination. Urrea unsparingly recreates life in the wilds of northern Mexico in the late 1880's, lightening it with humor and evocative characterization and description. This book drew me in despite initial reservations. An excellent read.
