One of the first to try to analyze dreams, Freud's work has led patients in search of psychological explanations for various physical and mental symptoms and phenomena. In "Beyond the Pleasure Principle, " Freud discusses the human struggle between the the drives of Eros and Thanatos. The drive of Eros produces such things as creativity, harmony, and sexual connection while Thanatos brings about self-destruction, aggression and compulsion.
