Les p�ches de plein vent, quand les gens passaient dans les vignes, semblaient faire expr�s d'abaisser � port�e des l�vres la caresse de leur chair tentante. L'air sentait une bonne odeur de pampre et de terre �chauff�e, et partout, sur les coteaux retentissants du coup de fusil des chasseurs, s'enten-dait, endormeur et m�lancolique, le: Tu m'as bu mon vin de l'ortolan. Parmi tous les chasseurs sortis ce ma-tin-l� de Rochegude, il en �tait un qui, assur�ment, pensait � autre chose qu'� chasser. Loin des chaumes et des cultures, l'arme rejet�e sur l'�paule et sans prendre garde aux supplications muettes de son chien, il allait droit devant lui � travers la colline, broyant lavandes et cailloux sous les clous de ses forts souliers, presque aussi peu �mu du brusque d�part d'une compagnie de perdrix rouges que de la chanson des derni�res cigales obstin�es � s'�gosiller, malgr� la moisson faite, de chaque c�t� du sentier, sur l'�corce aride des �rables-li�ges. M�d�ric Mireur, gros gar�on, r�joui, d'allure un tantinet militaire, que les bonnes gens de Rochegude, non sans une nuance de respect, appelaient affectueu-sement M. M�d�ric, gardait dans l'esprit un certain reste de culture.
