From the author of Annihilation, now a major motion picture on Netflix Dreams and nightmares entwine as three fellow travellers strive to achieve their deepest desires. Nicholas seeks to escape his demons in the city of Veniss' shadowy underground. But in so doing, he makes a deal with the devil himself. His twin sister, Nicola, embarks on a feverish search for him. And while discovering the city's hidden secrets, she'll spin her own hypnotic tale. Nicola's lover Shadrach is haunted by her mysterious disappearance. In the grip of despair, he decides to embark on a mythic journey. Shadrach must steel himself to visit the nightmarish levels deep beneath the surface of the city to bring his love back to the light. For these depths hold perils that are both complex and chilling. There, he will find wonders beyond imagining . . . and horrors greater than the heart can bear. Jeff Vandermeer is an interesting author to say the least. If you've had the opportunity to read City of Saints and Madmen or Shriek: An Afterword, you know exactly what I mean. His style is easy to read and uses just enough description to show you what he sees but also to allow you to make it your own vision at the same time. In Veniss Underground, Vandermeer takes us to the city of Veniss in a futuristic, post-industrialized world where people live both above and below ground. These two societies are so very separate, and yet the above ground society relies upon those living below ground to keep it going. The characters are intriguing - especially the interweaving of their individual and joined fates/journeys. For any fan of Science Fiction or the Futuristic Novel, this novel (and the short stories that accompany it) are well worth at least a glance.
