John J. Collins's Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is one of the most reliable and widely adopted critical textbooks at undergraduate and graduate levels alike, and for good reason. Enriched by decades of classroom teaching, it is aimed explicitly at motivated students, regardless of their previous exposure to the Bible or faith commitments. The approach is ecumenical, in the sense that it seeks not to impose any particular theological perspective but to provide information and raise questions that should be relevant to any student.Collins proceeds through the canon of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, judiciously presenting the current state of historical, archaeological, and literary understanding of the biblical text, and engaging the student in questions of significance and interpretation for the contemporary world. The third edition is presented in a new and engaging format with new maps and images. An index has been added to the volume for the first time.

Totally disappointed! The book would be recommended to others but not this version of it. I feel a PHOTOCOPY of the book was received as opposed to an actual published work. All maps and illustrations are in black and white, and some pages even have toner smears on them. If this feature (black and white maps and illustrations) was included in the description at the time of purchase, that was my oversight. If not, this feature needs to be disclosed! (I previously owned The Deuteronomistic History section as a separate book which has color maps and illustrations. Seeing the same text, maps, and illustrations in black and white only in the full book purchased here was a total disappointment.) Also, the order was placed on 01/24/2022 and received on 02/24/2022. Why so long for order processing and receipt? Was the photocopy being made? My course will be ending soon. Order processing and delivery took too long, and I do not want to pay for another photocopy. So, I guess I am stuck with what has been received for now and forced to retain it for my personal library. Totally disappointed!
