By the Great Horn Spoon! is a short historical novel set at the time of the California Gold Rush. Praiseworthy (a butler) and Jack (a twelve-year old boy) are the two main characters. They are hoping to strike it rich in California to save Aunt Arabella's house. In this Gold Rush adventure, Praiseworthy and Jack encounter all sorts of sticky situations and yet manage to get out of those situations. The story starts with the sea voyage from New England, continues around the southern tip of South America, then on to San Francisco, and finally to the gold fields. With all sorts of twists and turns this book will hold your attention to the very end. In fact, I would recommend it to upper elementary/middle school level teachers looking for a historical novel to supplement their Westward Movement unit in American history. Highly recommended.

Funny book set during California's gold rush period, especially entertaining for 4th - 5th grade boys. It supports the 4th grade CA social studies curriculum.
