D.H. Lawrence, initially requested to Helen Corke to write the book, but finally agreed for Lawrence to write it himself. The plot follows Helena Verden's affair with her ex-violin teacher, Siegmund MacNair. Although their affair is largely non-sexual, it is intense and intimate. Siegmund, ultimately couldn't leave his wife and children for Helen, and neither can the Helen give herself to him completely. This leads to Siegmund's suicide. A year after Siegmund's death, Helen meets Cecil Byrne, another would-be suitor and turns to him for comfort.
