I love this authors Vampires!
In a screenshot The Lesser Dead is vampires during the seventies, living in abandoned train tunnels together under the rule of Margaret, who turned our narrator, Joey Peacock, when he was only fourteen.
I gave this 5 stars because I recommend this book to be read, it is amazing in my opinion. I think he could be your next favorite author. I would also give as a gift, and I plan to read again.
Through his musings and conversational manner we are introduced to other characters that live in the tunnels, around the city or have already passed on to real death. He also gives out facts on vampires in this authors creation, reminding me a little of reading Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones for werewolves, in the best way. I felt Mongrels was the go to novel for the werewolf myth for me, and Christopher Buehlman is the go to author for the vampire myth. I never really got into Anne Rice's vampires, not knocking those that have, and something about Buehlman's just clicked for me. I read the Suicide Motor Club first and immediately picked up three more titles. The mythos he has built works with his writing style, making his novels a smooth read and very entertaining.
There are taboos in every culture, even for the undead, and when children sized vampires are seen drawing victims from a crowded train, they are put on the spot for how to handle it. The safety of the many are in danger by the risks of the few, and untrained, child vampires. What follows is a novel that shows the differences between human and vampire societies, and how sometimes the differences are very slight. Once again I do not want to give away any spoilers; the novel unravels in its own unique way that is best unspoiled.
