This book is a real gem. Christopher doesnt waste time or words getting down to business with this post-apocalyptic story about a plague that kills off most of the world's population leaving our hero as one of the few survivors. When we first meet the hero, a teenaged boy living in Britain, we learn that he has just lost his family in a terrible auto accident. The trauma of the event has made him dead inside. He has lost the ability to care about anything and is just going through the motions in life. Christopher lets the reader believe that our hero succeeds in the post-plague world precisely because he is already dead inside. It doesnt take long before the reader learns of a plague that starts in India, but quickly moves across the globe. Christopher keeps the story going a a brisk pace, and he knows how to build tension in too. There is no post-apocalyptic utopia in this book. The hero must contend with marauding gangs and loneliness. Many of the survivors he meets have become mentally unbalanced. I recommend this book.
