No one can match Donna Leon's brilliant books set in Venice, starring her appealing detective Guido Brunetti. Amazing how she pulls it off over and over. Each book highlights corruption in high places in this beautiful city that suffers from the huge influx of tourists, ancient buildings deteriorating, natives leaving, neglect of serious civic problems but the depiction of the warm Brunetti family and the humane messages compensate for the sadness of what's disappearing.

Honour against the underbelly of evil
Once I discovered Donna Leon, I wasn't happy until I poured through all of her captivating stories. I am just finishing "A Venetian Reckoning," my 11th. Guido and Paola and Vianello and Elletra wage a strong and honourable war against corruption and evil, even if they don't always completely win. Can't put them down until the end!

always a treat
yes, it's certainly true that Ms. Leon has a dark view of human behavior, and I have to
admit it drags for me a little. But you can't
help but feel her characters come to life in such a warm and wonderful way! And because I almost feel a part of Guido's policeman life and his terrific family, I will
always ready Ms. Leon's novels.
