The atmosphere of silence all around provided a faithful setting for Heidegger's philosophy. I could not help comparing it with the atmosphere I had encountered in the house of Professor Berdyaev near Paris and that of Professor Jaspers in Heidelberg. The atmosphere of silence all around provided a faithful setting for Heidegger's philosophy. I could not help comparing it with the atmosphere I had encountered in the house of Professor Berdyaev near Paris and that of Professor Jaspers in Heidelberg. In every case, the external world faithfully reflected the world of the mind. In Berdyaev's case it was the spirit of communion; in Jaspers's that of spiritual engagement. But in Heidegger's case it was the spirit of overwhelming solitude. With the four essays in this book, which Professor Heidegger gave me, this much-discussed philosopher now appears for the first time before the English-speaking world. As Professor Heidegger pointed out to me, the four essays are complementary and have an organic unity. Two deal with the essence of metaphysics, the other two with the essence of poetry. The two Hlderlin studies, in Heidegger's words, were "born out of a necessity of thought" conditioned by the questions raised in the metaphysical papers. STEFAN SCHIMANSKI

This volume is probably the easiest introduction to Heidegger?s thought which isn?t just a ?Guide to??.
Although billed as by Heidegger, in fact two-thirds of this volume is by Heidegger?s pupil Werner Brock. Brock provides a clear and illuminating introduction to Heidegger?s massive and unfinished Being and Time. He then provides an introduction to the four essays by Heidegger translated in this volume. These essays are two pieces on the poetry of Hölderlin and two other pieces ?The Essence of Truth? and ?What is Metaphysics??. These pieces show Heidegger writing in modes (literary criticism and public addresses) which means that they are more accessible than most of his work.
Despite the notorious difficulty of Heidegger?s writing style and terminology, his is a philosophy that is worth exploring for those interested in C20 philosophy. My own interest in his work is due to the parallels I see between it and Daoism, particularly in passages like this:
[This lecture?s] sole thought is that thing which has dawned on Western thinking from the beginning as the one thing that has to be thought?Being. But Being is not a product of thinking. It is more likely that essential thinking is an occurrence of Being.
