The New York Times bestselling novel from Garth Stein - a heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of a dog's efforts to hold together his family in the face of a divisive custody battle. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zo, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zo at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.

Good Book. Through a dog's eyes. Funny, Sad, and couldn't put it down. What a novel thought...to think that a dog could possibly think like a human. Loved it.

One of the best.
I'm not into racing, and this book DOES talk a little about it, but in relationship to life. Let's face it, we all race through life and feel like it's out of control sometimes. Seeing this for a dog's eyes, a loyal friend, is so moving and thoughtful. I gave one copy away and ordered another... it's THAT good.

Sometimes you just need a dog's perspective.
If you talk to your dog like he understands you, then this is a book for you. A little more racing references than I needed, but such a thought provoking book about the kinship of dogs.

A sublime popcorn read!
I really enjoyed this book. It's not super difficult and is somewhat predictable at times, but the storytelling through the dog's POV is very well-executed. The dog's innocence and funny way of looking at the world will leave you chuckling and will help you soldier through the sad moments in the book. Enjoy!
