He studied French and Russian literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, then lived in Berlin and Paris, where he launched a brilliant literary career. In 1940 he moved to the United States, and achieved renown as a novelist, poet, critic, and translator. He taught literature at Wellesley, Stanford, Cornell, and Harvard. This book is a gift indeed. His prose reads like poetry and as in most of his work, it is obvious that his heart is broken over the exile from his homeland. The details of a childhood in Russia and life in Berlin I found fascinating. Also, his love of butterflies and moths is interesting. I give this book 5 stars and it will always be in my library to read again and again.
