First published in 1949, award-winning Earth Abides is one of the most influential science-fiction novels of the 20th century. It remains a fresh, provocative story of apocalyptic pandemic, societal collapse, and rebirth. The cabin had always been a special retreat for Isherwood Williams, a haven from the demands of society. But one day while hiking, Ish was bitten by a rattlesnake, and the solitude he had so desired took on dire new significance. He was sick for days - and often delirious - waking up to find two strangers peering in at him from the cabin door. Yet oddly, instead of offering help, the two ran off as if terrified. Not long after, the coughing began. Ish suffered chills and fever, and a measles-like rash on his skin. He was one of the few people in the world to live through that peculiar malady, but he didn't know it then. Ish headed home when he finally felt himself again - and noticed the strangeness almost immediately. No cars passed him on the road; the gas station not far from his cabin looked abandoned; and he was shocked to see the body of a man on the roadside near a small town. Without a radio or phone, Ish had no idea of humanity's abrupt demise. He had escaped death, yet could not escape the catastrophe - and with an eerie detachment he found himself curious as to how long it would be before all traces of civilization faded from Earth.

My all time favorite book , all genres and all authors . This is " the post apoplectic novel" of them all. I have read this book many times and will read a few more before I die, God willing. It means so much that my son gave me a first edition for Christmas last year and it the only gift I received in years that I still remember . I love it. Read it , that is all.

global killing virus
Another good book about the end of mankind and how they will struggle to carry on the species.
As I approach the end of the book it turns out to be more and more sad because all the main character disappear... but the other ones carry on

awesome thought
I have read this book three times. My son has read it at least twice. My mother has read it several times. It was my grandmother' favorite of all times and she read alot of books in her life. She expired in 1987 and I inherited her copy of "Earth Abides". It is very well used....I would not part with it. I have purchased several copies from Alibris and have passed them along to several people. In today's world this book appears to be becoming more like a non-fiction book than fiction...if we are not careful.

this was a re-read
Read this book again after many years and still enjoyed it. Wonder if this kind of behavior among people would really happen in a like situation?
