The uprooting of seven million civilians - women, children, and elderly men - from their homes in the German provinces of East Prussia, Pomerania, and Silesia following World War II is largely unknown in the United States. Weeds Like Us is a gripping true adventure story about the author's own East Prussian family. The author's earliest years were spent in relative comfort on his grandfather's farm in East Prussia during World War II. For him, life in Hitler's Germany was the natural order of things. Then, in January 1945, just after the author's seventh birthday, the Russians rolled into East Prussia. Full of unexpected twists and turns, Weeds Like Us tells the story of what happened over the next six years, as the author's family tried to make its way safely to the West.

Being that this is my family's heritage and there is no spoken history of this time by our parents but it is the closest I have to this missing period. My mother recently read this and acknowledged that this was albeit, with a few variations, very, very similar to her history but that was all she would say. My brother also read it and now whenever they sit down to a meal they think of Gunter and his family and every meal they struggled for. It is very humbling but makes you want to understand more of why and how these people came to this place and why they were held accountable for so much and in many, many instances rightfully so. Sometimes we have to know what our shame was and how we earned it, not just feel it. But the story to me was clear, vivid and very, very representative of the people I know and have known, I just never knew where they fit in in the world. Thank you Gunter!
