I've heard smart people say that Cousin Pons and Cousin Bette were the last of his good novels. Well, Cousin Bette was very, very good. Cousin Pons, however, is incomprehensible. I tried it in French, and decided my French was inadequate to the challenge, so I tried it in English: that novel is mixed up and screwy. Even in English I don't know what he's saying. Avoid this.
