Lauren Cody' s " Writer' s block" is a collection of short stories and poems featuring vast types of themes. From the comical and silly, to the heartfelt and emotional, hopefully everyone can find something they like. The short story that inspired the title features a sarcastic and snippy heroine that readers will either love or hate. Her insecurities are expressed through her running commentary regarding finding the cure for writers block. This story was semi-autobiographical, and the story was the first written for this book. " My New Life" is the story of a timid girl trying to make the transition to become a confident independent woman. Readers experience her epiphany of seeing that she is the master of her own future, and follow her through her first experiences being on her own. " A Strange Occurrence in the life of Robert Wallace Parker" takes a different tone than the other stories contained in this book. Upon entering the life of a 37 year old man starting to feel the sting of a mid-life crisis, readers follow him through an emotional breakdown with a twist ending. " Tyler at Twilight" is a romantic and fun story of young love. It tells a tale that anyone young at heart will relate with, and expresses emotions that will bring readers memories of their time falling in love. Meanwhile, " The Great Fast" is the inner thoughts of a hypochondriac who is dealing with a little hunger pain. It' s a light and fun story that will make readers smile. The characters were developed with intents to be easy to relate to, and hopefully everyone can find some of themselves in one of the people or situations they endeavor. The poetryin this book ranges from the deeply emotional to the fun. Each poem reflects a different emotion, and each was written from a different state of mind. Touching upon everything from first love and heartbreak to a disdain for rhyming, these poems are all different. Some poems, such as " My Sweatshirt", " Lipstick", and " The Pillow Monster" are simple poems that intend to make the reader smile. The other poems contain more emotion, and should be left open to the readers own interpretation of what they mean. "It's not that Easy being green" uses the senses to describe the feeling of a color. And then on the other end of the spectrum, "A Movie" is an abstract view on life, taken from the view point of someone viewing a movie. The different styles and subject matter featured in "Writer's Block" displays a great range of thoughts and ideas. All of the poems and stories are unrelated to each other, and reflect many different situations. You might laugh, you might cry, you might hate it, but hopefully, you'll take the time to read it.
