Once upon a time, I was a little girl who disappeared. Once upon a time, my name was not Alice. Once upon a time, I didn't know how lucky I was. When Alice was ten, Ray took her away from her family, her friends - her life. She learned to give up all power, to endure all pain. She waited for the nightmare to be over. I don't normally read books like this, since my tendency is to escape reality with a little book-vacation. Once I started reading, though, it was difficult to stop. I had to find out what kind or redemption, if any, was available for this poor child.
The story is narrated over the course of about a week by a kidnapped girl who is waiting for death. Stolen five years earlier at age 10, she is completely detached from life and reality, and has no concept of love or family except through memory. The question of whether she will take a dawning opportunity to act or continue to be acted upon -- and if she acts, in what way and for whom? -- spurred me to complete this little novel in an afternoon. The prose is almost lyrical in it's sharp and spare narration.
A haunting, scathing, reality check for all of us. Do I like it? Well, I won't keep it on my shelf because I probably won't read it again -- but I doubt I'll ever forget it.
