Many people who choose the simplicity of life in farm country often have an obsession with privacy that can compromise that simplicity. They mean no harm, but when they turn their heads the other way and keep secrets, they enable sins, sometimes in the form of horrible crimes, to go undetected. In a story set in post World War II rural Pennsylvania, a dusty country lane, named by 19th century soldiers returning from the Mexican War, meanders past the farm home of a beautiful young Pennsylvania German girl being raised in a strict religious faith. Her rebellious behavior and fascination with detective work, all to the dismay of her parents and church leaders, puts Martha Dern's virtue in jeopardy when she encounters murderers who have a grand plan. Unexpected love interferes with the violation of her innocence. It's a perverted love that must be suppressed so not to interfere with the reason to have her - the grand plan's call for the white supremacist's pure offspring. The Oregon Inn, built by the Hartman family, had long been an exclusive retreat for the wealthy of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But as Americans became more mobile, the rich fled to far away places, and now the once elegant hotel had become a neighborhood bar, its rooms now monthly rentals. The end of World War II saw West Point graduate Will Hartman, the heir, come home suffering emotionally from the horrors of battle and his perceived failure as an Army officer. Incapable of running the Inn, and his son Seth was too young to take over. He's forced to hand over the Inn's management to greedy people with selfish motives. The Oregon Inn soon became a haven for crime and corruption. Ultimately Martha's life, in avery real way, is threatened when the murderers suspect what she knows, and later when she chooses to use her knowledge of killings to save the Inn for Seth, the boyfriend she is forbidden to have.
