This could have been a great book. It's well written and I like the concept. The story was excellent and the central characters were well drawn. It's a lot better than many books currently in print. However, it missed out on being "great" and slipped to 'run of the mill" for 2 reasons 1. A couple of the peripheral characters did not ring true to life. 2. The behaviour of the old people was completely unrealistic. The author knows nothing about alzheimers or senility, or the behaviour of cats. Yes, cats. Imagine taking a cat to a hospital room and it just curling up and going to sleep on the patient's bed. Anyone who's ever had a cat knows it would be in a frantic state, checking out the room, all the closets - the hallways etc. etc. If you don't read too deeply into the behaviour of the secondary characters however, it's an interesting story. It would have been improved with a little more research into the elderly and retirement homes and cats. A couple of the other minor characters should definitely have been fleshed out more realistically too. I wanted to like this book as it was highly recommended to me and I expected a lot from it. It fell short. I will not read it again.
