While this book is not of the same quality as his better-known "Silk" and "Ocean Sea", Baricco's writing is still clear, concise, and filled with well-chosen images. This short novel divided into two sections: The first section tells of a girl hiding under the floor while her father and brother are murdered for political reasons. The section section tells of the relationship between the now-grown girl and the one surviving murderer. While the plot seems a bit contrived or didactic, the psychological depiction of the characters is "spot on" making the book well worth a read.
