Sir John Macdonald only lived five years after the completion of this great undertaking, but he lived long enough to realize that his statesmanship had succeeded and that he had laid the enduring foundation of a great nation. What was to come after could not but be very largely the development of the policy for which he had stood and which he had made effective in spite of the most powerful opposi tion and, seemingly, insurmountable obstacles.
