I hope, that I have shown my appreciation of the honor which you have done me in inviting me to speak tonight, by coming at a time when it is most difficult, as you may readily understand, to get away from Washington, and by the fact that this is one of only four or five invitations which I have accepted out of nearly two hundred received for this and the next month. The interest throughout the country is now so great in all phases of the effects and in uences of the European war that it would seem as if every variety of organization, com mercial, social, awe and scientific as well as legal, were anxious to know more about what might be called the present day Pan Aineric'anism and the status of the Monroe Doctrine as affected by the European war: Recognizing the notable Character Of'this organization, ' I accepted the invitation which Was so earnestly.
