Excerpt from A Selection of Spiritual Songs: With Music for Use in Social Meetings The Standing Committee on Revision of Hymnal reported to the Gen eral Council at Baltimore in May, 1883, that a Hymnal with well-ap pro ved and devotional tunes accompanying the hymns is a deeply felt want of our church, in reference to which your Committee has hitherto been debarred from taking action because of the great cost of such a work 5 and sug gested that by taking an existing book of approved excellence, and adding to it from our own collection about one hundred of such hymns as are not already in the proposed book, a Hymnal could be supplied at reasonable cost (not exceeding sixty cents per copy) which would admirably answer the needs of our church. Whereupon the Committee were directed to proceed with the preparation and publication of the work aforesaid, at the cost above expressed, and with the least possible delay. This duty has been performed, and the result is here given to the church. It is believed that the Hymnal now presented will meet all the require ments of the worship of the Reformed Episcopal Church for some years to come, and is the best that could be done at the prescribed cost and in the circumstances. The Committee asks a generous reception on the part of the congregations whom it has attempted with much labor and pains to serve, and trusts that a willingness to honor the unanimous action of the General Council of the church will lead the parishes generally to receive and adopt it. Much of the music will be found suitable for the stated Sunday services and the Church Festivals, and much of it suitable for the week-day and other social services; and, generally, all of it will be familiar to those ao customed to worship in the Evangelical parishes of the church from which the majority of this church have come. A classified table of contents has been prepared in addition to the usual alphabetical index of subjects, and will prove a ready guide to all the hymns pertaining to any division of the church year.
