Excerpt from Introduction to Our Early English Literature: From the Earliest Times to the Norman Conquest Many excellent books are published, both in Eng land Nld Germany, giving extracts of the principal pieces in the anglo-saxon, or Early English, Literature; but I have found in my lectures and classes that a much wider interest and a more intelligent study of the language may be created by some suggestive remarks on the nature of the different poems and their general con nection, and where possible, something of the author's life and times.
