The explanation, however, did not come at first. At last the idea struck me that there might be an intimate relation between the size and growth of the tongue and the size and development of the jaws, and that this would best explain the facts without any assumption of the inheritance of acquired characters. The facts with which I was acquainted were so easily harmonised by the hypothesis, that in a few hours I had roughly sketched out in my mind the theory that I am about to explain.
