Excerpt from Personal Recollections: Of Many Prominent People Whom I Have Known, and of Events Especially of Those Relating to the History of St. Louis During the First Half of the Present Century St. Louis IN 1818. AS early as the year 1809, shortly after the return of Lewis and Clark from the expedition to the Pacific Ocean, my father came from North Carolina to Upper Louisiana, and pur chased six hundred acres of land on the waters of Bonhomme Creek, in what was then called the St. Louis District, Louisiana Territory, bringing some negroes with him, with a view of establishing a farm and of removing his family to the country. He returned to North Carolina, leaving his plantation in charge of John Ward, a respectable farmer then living on the waters of Creve Coeur Lake. For some years he was deterred from bringing his family on account of the danger and trouble said to exist from the Indians.
