It is regretted that the volume is so large; but it is believed that the omission of any thing that would materially diminish its size would make it incomplete. Much might be said in this preface, or a preliminary chapter might not inappropriately have been inserted, concerning the his tory, kind, and condition of roads and drainage, at least in Ohio, if not in other countries and times, such as the roads of Rome of old.
