There was about her a fragrance and a dewiness which' made her conspicuous, even among the group of attrae tive girls with whom she was sitting. Her eyes were black; her blue-black hair lay back from the temples in glossy waves; to - day, because the sultry August morning had given her a slight headache, she wore the shower of black curls schoolgirl fashion down her back, securing the heavy cluster of hair with a big white bow in the nape of the neck. Her complexion, instead of being the usual dusky complexion of the brunette, was dazzlingly, snowily white. A faint sea-shell pink invaded the cheeks in trailing ridges, on much the same plan as the petal of a white peony is veined with pink.
