It includes brief introductions to the various aspects of Burritt's life as self-taught linguist, abolitionist, worker for international peace, ocean penny postage, and other causes, as well as extensive entries from his journal and correspondence. Youngest son in a poor family with ten children, Elihu Burritt apprenticed himself to a blacksmith after his father's death.
