To avoid war, Earth's government must find an equally unusual object: a type of sheep used in the alien race's coronation ceremony. To find the sheep, the government turns to Harry Creek, ex-cop, war hero, and hacker extraordinaire, who, with the help of a childhood friend turned artificial intelligence, scours the earth for the rare creature. Others have plans for the sheep as well. The military. Adherents of a secret religion based on the writings of a twenty-first century SF author. And alien races eager to start a revolution on their home world and a war on Earth. To keep our planet from being enslaved, Harry will have to pull off a grand diplomatic coup. Clever
This tongue-in-cheek yarn alternately reminded me of "The Fifth Element," "Men in Black," and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." "The Android's Dream" is a ridiculously fun joyride through inter-planetary politics, genetic shenanigans, and other assorted forms of mayhem and intrigue. I was mildly distracted by the nagging thought that someone in Hollywood has probably optioned this as a Will Smith vehicle, but that's probably because it generously fills the dynamic plot and character requirements of a sci-fi/comedy summer blockbuster. At the same time, the author never tips his hand into full blown parody, and instead dances on the edge with good humor and skillful storytelling. The resolution is cleverly executed, and manages to tie up all the strange directions in which the narrative threads were sent spinning throughout the course of the book.
