"On an unseasonably warm autumn day, an American teacher enters a public bathroom beneath Sofia's National Palace of Culture. There he meets Mitko, a charismatic young hustler, and pays him for sex. He returns to Mitko again and again over the next few months, drawn by hunger and loneliness and risk, and finds himself ensnared in a relationship in which lust leads to mutual predation and tenderness can transform into violence. As he struggles to reconcile his longing with the anguish it creates, he's forced to grapple with his own fraught history. There are unnerving similarities between the world of his Southern childhood and the foreign country he finds himself in, a country whose geography and griefs he discovers as he learns more of Mitko's own narrative, his private history of illness, exploitation, and want." -- Page [4] cover.

The Iowa Writers Workshop has prestige, leading to acceptance of manuscripts by elite editors. But beware. This--and books like it--may be arty but don't do what fiction needs to do. The lead character, a teacher, pays and then is repeatedly taken financially by a hardened male prostitute. What we learn is merely that the teacher is stupid and that the male prostitute is doing what hustlers typically do. Does that grip you? Do you feel captured by either of these characters--both failing to rise above their worst instincts? I suppose Iowa Writers Workshop knows how to make art out of writing about lowlifes, but that doesn't mean you will want to read this--the outcome is inevitable and the path to it not interesting. No matter the endlessly long (many pages!) paragraphs, the neat wording. The futility of this kind of writing is obvious. You can buy a first edition cheap, which shows that readers aren't fooled.
