This book by Guppy was first published in 1888 and is a very useful account of the origin of the places where British surnames were originally located. Due to demography over the years as a part of the industrial revolution movement, many families relocated and the indigenous area of their namesake was lost. Guppy has gone to great lengths to restore the origins of the family names and it has to be a valuable tool to the genealogist. The copy I ordered was hard bound and a re-print, there were pages that were hard to read due to poor copying, but nevertheless you were warned about this and although hard to read and a few minor pieces of information missing from this extremely rare book, it serves a great purpose for the historian of social history.
