You follow a young man who is clearly an adventurist as he rides pony express, scouts for gold and the calvalry. Becoming enthralled himself with the writings and politics of Cecil Rhoades in what is becomming colonial Africa and the seeds of what will becopme the state of Rhodesia. Leaving the USA, Burnham travels to South Africa with his young wife and son and tyou follow this family as they settle into this new and growing country. Burnham becomes a scout in Rhoade's employ fighting in the Matabele Wars and later in the Boer War with a short break to come back to the US to strike gold in the Klondike just to "take a breather". This read will not leave you looking for the pace to pick up as it simply does not fall off. Filled with interesting history and facts of life of living on the African and North American continents. This is a book that any man or women that enjoys history and adventure will find great enjoyment in reading.
