I think I was drawn to read the book after seeing a movie made in the1930's based on the book. I believe I was in 9th grade. It is still one of my favorite books and will always have a place in my bookshelves. Being a native Californian and having spent time in the back county and a big fan of the missions founded by Father Serra this makes it more real.
