Seller's Description:
VG+ Glued wraps with cloth binding on spine, color illustration, and cut-out in center of cover. Unnumbered pages. Features many b+w and some color illustrations. For many, folk art is a thing of the past, having little to do with our own age, hearkening back to simpler times and isolated places. And, because it comes from the hands of self-taught artists, there is a prevailing attitude that folk art reveals little that is sophisticated or important in its content or form. Yet, in the 1980s, folk art has for the first time since the 30s and 40s begun to have a direct and significant bearing on American art. Its influences can be seen in the work of an impressive number of trained contemporary artists, from painting and sculpture to ceramics and fiber art. Much of this phenomenon can be attributed to the return to representational art and the corresponding search for sources upon which to build their interpretations. The directness with which folk artists make creative statements, and appropriate or refashion objects seems to have a particular attraction for contemporary artists working in a world that is increasingly more complex, specialized, and difficult to understand and interpret.
