Von Sternberg was a European director, famous for discovering Marlene Dietrich and bringing her to this country. She starred in seven of his films, most now forgotten. I'd heard that this book, his account of working in Hollywood's formative years, was the best book on the film industry, so for those who like inside stuff on filmmaking, this book is for you. He's honest to a fault.
The title is dumb and unconnected to the book.
Von Sternberg was known as harsh and arrogant, a tough guy to work with, and that side comes through in his writing. For me, it mars the pleasure of the book. He spends too much time settling accounts from attacks from long-gone industry people. I wanted more humor and more warmth. The photos are good.
