No other book I've read expresses so simply and clearly the magic of flying. Hynes became a bomber pilot in World War II when he was barely out of his teens. His memoir tells of those years, without extravagance of language or emotion and yet so evocatively that the reader nods in agreement: this is how it feels. Of his training Hynes writes, "we began to have some feeling for the movement of the plane, some sense of the harmony that exists between a pilot's body and his machine.... We had come to be at ease in space." Flying isn't all "Flights of Passage" is about, of course: it's about growing up, marrying, assuming responsibility, accepting fear and exhilaration and love. It's moving, and funny, a book to read and put back on your shelf to re-read.
