This is a tour of the finest gardens in Britain, surrounding the finest and most famous houses and castles found anywhere in the world, though these form only the background if glimpsed at all. When appropriate, Peter Coats provides a brief historical background, as in the case of Hever Castle where Anne Boleyn, later married to and still later executed by Henry VIII, grew up. These narratives are as inspiring as the beautiful color photographs of the many elegant and elaborate gardens, eye-candy for any who admire fine gardens. It was one of the first garden style books I ever read, in 1979 when we began building a Cotswald-style house and I wanted to see typical English gardens so to create the "right" landscaping. The gardens in this volume were, and still are, well beyond my wildest dreams; I couldn't even afford the book but borrowed it from the library. But I studied it intently for years; my name filled both sides of the library card in spite of the fact that many of the photos in that first edition were in black and white. I was delighted to find it used and cheap at alibris, and happier still when it arrived: a later edition with all color photos and new text (yes, I know parts of the old one almost by heart)! You won't learn how to garden from this, but you will learn fine garden appreciation, which will enrich your taste and spill over into your own modest garden.
