This book will be a welcome tool to any midwife or doula, or even to the very interested and engaged pregnant person. It has incredible detail and breadth about all of the stages of pregnancy and birth, and yet remains readable and accessible. Each chapter has very detailed illustrations, demonstrating techniques. There are well-written side bars for breakdowns of particular skills, ideas for parents, and explanations of particular aspects of pregnancy and labor.
You'll find a section for the profile of a midwife, prenatal care, problems in pregnancy, assisting at a birth, complications in labor, postpartum care, becoming a midwife, and being a practicing midwife. It is rounded out at the end with a very thorough section of appendices, offering resources and sample records and charts.
The book is written with the midwife/aspiring midwife in mind, and takes the perspective of the person who attending to safeguard the birth. I found the combination of technical information and anecdotal illustration in the writing to be really engaging and educational. I also really appreciated the language use- very friendly towards non-traditional family structures.
I have been reading and re-reading it since acquiring it a few months ago. It is so packed with information that I have needed to read some sections multiple times to digest it all, and yet it also helps me to see how much more there is to learn!
Overall, I think this book is a great addition to any birth lover's library. It isn't as comprehensive as Varney's Midwifery or books by Anne Frye, but it is a solid introduction to the craft and won't break your back or or your bank.
