Seller's Description:
Good. Hardcover Good Ships From Canada New in new dust jacket 179 p From School Library Journal: YA--One of the great mysteries of the 19th Century was the fate of the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror, two ships of the British Royal Navy which disappeared on their second Arctic expedition Remains found later indicated that the explorers had suffered a horrible death, enduring starvation and in some cases turning to cannibalism Canadian anthropologist Beattie hoped that Arctic temperatures would help contemporary scientists decipher the puzzle Applying modern scientific methods, Beattie's team shed new light on the reasons behind the demise of a scientific expedition which had been the most lavishly outfitted, scientifically up-to-date expedition ever mounted when it sailed in 1845 This book enables readers to actually look into the faces of men who died almost 150 years ago--so perfect has been their preservation in Arctic ice The pictures taken by Beattie which illustrate and document the two summers.

Seller's Description:
As New in As New jacket. From their ice-shrouded graves, three 19th-century seamen reveal the chilling fate of a doomed Arctic expedition. Book and jacket in excellent condition; with b/w & coloured decorated half title, plates, maps & illustrations; tight and clean A reconstruction of Sir John Franklin's ill-fated Arctic expedition of 1848 when the HMS Terror and HMS Erebus disappeared, made possible by the discovery of a bleached human skull, found by the team working with anthropologist Dr Owen Beattie on 29 June 1981. This led to 3 further scientific expeditions over the next five years, during which time more information was pieced together. The bodies of 3 Victorian seamen were found on King William Island, well preserved by the permafrost for 133 years which enabled twentieth century forensic and anthropological scientists to uncover the mystery. Also revealed were the circumstances by which the surviving members of Franklin's elite naval forces came within sight of the Northwest Passage, which was their journey's goal, only to succumb to the horrors of starvation, scurvy and cannibalism.
