Many useful composites are envisiged by materials scientists but the problem of how to make them is often the greater hurdle. This text focuses on the basic principles of composite fabrication, looking at the diversity of ideas and techniques. In some cases, these have been borrowed and were designed for use with different materials. In other cases new techniques ahave been developed which take into account the characteristics of metals and ceramics and higher temperatures typically involved in their processing. Many types of metal-matrix composite are covered in this book, and it aims to thoroughly treat the physics and chemistry of the interactions between matrix and the reinforcement that occurs as the composite is formed. It provides a basis for understanding the relationship between the mechanics of the process, the kinetics and thermodynamics of in-process interactions, and the final properties of the composites. It is intended as a reference work for those whose practice is making composites, as well as a reference for those who wish to understand the basics of the processes used.
