Seller's Description:
Very good, very good. 222, illus., notes, bibliography, index. Victor Shelford was one of the most influential figures in natural science and conservation during the first half of the twentieth century. In this first full-length biography, Robert Croker follows Shelford's life from his youth and education through the pioneering decades when his research into plant and animal communities and physiological ecology helped lay the foundation for modern ecology. His early work on the sand dunes, ponds, streams, and forests bordering Lake Michigan led to the acceptance of animal ecology as a distinct discipline within the biological sciences. Shelford developed the concept of ecological succession of animals, and he was among the first to consider food webs, the intricate interrelationships in feeding habits that ultimately determine species composition and community structure.
