Westlake has perfected the tongue-in-cheek caper novel. In this, one of his earlier efforts, he hasn't quite reached his stride. The plot sags in spots, as does the prose & the dated descriptions haven't the charm of Craig Rice or Richard Lockridge. Glimpses of NYC-that-was didn't stir me. i liked the premise - that cops know how to beat the system when they become robbers - but not the book. Easy to put down in the middle & forget to finish.
