Using modern cartographic tools and methods - from satellite imagery to computer-generated graphics - the book presents information about the state's history and development. The "atlas" begins with a chronological history of Massachusetts that discusses Native American settlements, European contacts, the Puritan commonwealth, the royal colony, the Revolutionary and Federalist eras, 19th-century industrialization and urbanization, and the 20th-century metropolitan and postindustrial commonwealth. The book then examines the political and social landscape of the state, exploring such topics as political organization, women's experience, ethnicity and race, health care, architecture, communications, transportation and energy, and the unique case of the Quabbin Reservoir.
