Thoughtful and exciting - what a combination!
After reading Rainbow's End and becoming completely enamored with Ellis Peters' (aka Edith Pargeter) writing style, I immediately ordered this book from the library. I am often disappointed when reading a second book by an author that I think I am going to love, but I wasn't this time. If anything, this book far surpassed my initial impression of Ms. Pargeter's skill. It combines a straightforward but interesting plot with wonderful observations about love (and the things we're willing to do for it), the influence of our world's history on us, the boundaries that grow up between us because of age...oh, so many things! Every page is full of really excellent insights into human nature. Although this would lead one to think that the mystery aspect of the book would fall short, it doesn't at all. Rather, the suspense that builds throughout the novel and comes to a head at the climax is stronger than that of any mystery book I've read recently!! It actually had my heart racing. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone looking for a deep but also exciting read!
