Philokalia (fill-oh-CA:LL-ya), the compendium of the sayings of the Desert Fathers.
Fr. Merton edited this volume during his early days in the monastery, before he began to experiment with Eastern religious practices and some of his writings became questionable.
This little volume is handy, compact and, I feel, essential reading for anyone embarking upon a serious program of spiritual development.
