Lost Art
A wonderful, detailed survey of the state of pottery in PNG as it was in the seventies; now many of the industries are long gone, and the lifestyle that once surrounded the cultural use of the pottery has radically changed. This is extremely important documentation. Beautiful and empathic photographs of potters at their work, and their wares, are lavishly provided. The text is technical and very thorough and yet engages the reader with glimpses of life in the villages. I originally bought the 2000 edition, but have recently also acquired the 1982 Sydney edition (first edition), and find it to be the more glorious production (now a collector's item). I recommend this book not only to specialists, but also to people who love to look at fine artwork in terra cotta.
