Isobel Miller gave up God for worldly pursuits. But as graduation approached and her engagement was broken, she questioned that decision. "If You will prove to me that You are, and if You will give me peace, I will give You my whole life." God heard Isobel's prayers and responded. Her search ended, and He gave her a whole new life of fruitful missionary service in China.

Three books have been integral to my Christian life and growth over the past 30 years, excluding the Bible, of course: the Autobiography of George Mueller; Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret; and Isobel Kuhn's By Searching. I've read each over many times, and as this one was written by a woman, I find it to be more specific to my needs than even the other two blockbuster classics mentioned above. This is definitely a book for Christians. Others may not find it as encouraging or challenging as those who view it from this perspective. In this book, Isobel Kuhn honestly speaks of the years she cared little to nothing about God, the amusements she partook of during that time (with many later regrets), the thing that drove her to finally seek the real God -- should he exist and be a participant in human affairs (she was a true seeker -- note the title), and the months and years immediately following her decision to embrace Jesus Christ. Specifically, the first three chapters define her search, the fourth her conversion, five and six speak of the solidification of her faith commitment. Chapter seven tells us how Isobel Miller received her 'call' to missionary service in China, and eight brings her to the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago for training. It's here that she meets her future husband, John Kuhn. And in the next few chapters, we read about some specific happenings and unique 'answers to prayer' that seem to point out that God did indeed have a plan for Isobel's life. In the second to last chapter Isobel takes on a job as the superintendent of the 'Vancouver Girls Corner Club', where she was to stay for well over a year (and learn many valuable life lessons) before heading to China and marriage. If you are a person of faith (especially Christianity), you will treasure this book. I dare also say you will read it over and over again throughout your lifetime.
