For the first time in paperback comes two of Overholser's prime examples of his unique take on the Western novel. In the title novel, when Dan Larsen learns his father may have stashed stolen loot on a ranch he once owned, Dan aims to fight for the ranch now claimed by a lawman. In "High Valley", Joe Talbot works on a ranch in the Big Bear Mountains where the owner mysteriously dies. Now Joe is under attack by outlaws in the valley.

According to the copyright information, more than forty years elapsed between the writing of the two short novels in this book. And from all that I can tell, Mr. Overholser never missed a beat, nor flagged what so ever in his creation of memorable characters or events. I liked this book because both stories are traditional western fare told the way they should be told--a young man learns his father was a bank robber after his mother's death and he seeks to find the money hidden on a ranch where he had onced lived, but another man has claimed the ranch because he believes HE'S the law in that area; and the other story--the owner of a ranch dies mysteriously and his widow is prepared to sell out and leave just as outlaws declare war on the ranch. Both stories display the incredible talent of Mr. Overholser. That is why I say get this book; you'll enjoy it immensely.
